Grid congestion in machine design | Lenze at Machine Building South 2026

What is grid congestion in machine building?

Grid congestion limits the available electrical capacity for new and existing machines.
For machine builders, this directly impacts peak power, commissioning and scalability.
This makes energy usage and peak power a design parameter, not a post-installation issue.

At Machine Building South 2026, Lenze shows how to design machines that operate reliably within these constraints without oversizing or redesign later in the process..

Workshop: how to design machines under grid constraints

Machine builders need to translate grid constraints into concrete design decisions:

  • Dimensioning of drives and installed power
  • Control of peak loads during operation
  • Energy distribution across machine modules

Live talk at Machine Building South
Designing machines under grid constraints: strategies to deal with grid congestion
Speaker: Wouter Meijers
Wednesday, July 8, 2026 — 10:30 - 10:50

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • How grid congestion impacts machine performance and commissioning
  • Which design choices influence peak power consumption
  • How to reduce peak loads without oversizing components
  • Practical strategies to make machines compliant with grid limitations

How to reduce peak power in machines

Peak power is becoming a key constraint in machine design. Grid limits can prevent machines from being installed or expanded.

By combining high-efficiency motor-drive systems such as the IE5/IE6 motor drive system with scalable variable frequency drive (VFD) platforms like the i950 servo inverter, peak power can be reduced at system level.

Decentralised architectures help to distribute energy more efficiently and limit installed power.

The result: machines that operate within available grid capacity, without oversizing or complex retrofits.
