ASIC - Application Specific Integrated Circuit

Application specifically integrated electric circuit (electric circuit on customer's demand)

There is a difference between
  • full custom ASICs, which are developed exclusively on customer's demand [efficient only for large quantities] and
  • semi-custom ASICs.

The latter have prefabricated structures, which are combined according to the customer's demands. This can be executed during manufacturing by applying a metallic coating, as e. g. in case of the mask ROMs. Or it can be executed by the user himself, on site by means of a programming device, as e. g. in case of the EPROMs or EEPROMs.
