i700: Firmware download, compatibility of hardware and software versions

Question:
Firmware download: Which firmware versions can be loaded into an existing i700 device?

Answer:
In principle are Firmware versions can only be loaded if the major version of the version to be loaded matches the major version of the existing version on the device. A different main stand version usually indicates that software versions are not compatible with each other and therefore cannot be loaded:
  • For example, both the newer version V01.11.12 and the older version V01.07.07 can be loaded onto an i700 with firmware V01.10.12, but not version V02.11.12.
  • All software versions with main version V02.xx.xx can be loaded onto a newer device with FW V02.10.12, but not the previous versions with main version V01.xx.xx.
  • Special case to simplify the update of existing devices:
  • A firmware with main version V02.xx.xx can be loaded once onto an i700 with FW V01.09.05. However, the way back from V2 to V1 remains blocked.
The attached Compatibility list i700 contains a table showing which firmware versions can be loaded on the i700 .
The loadability depends on the hardware version (HW) of the device and the existing firmware version.
  •  i700 axis modules: As of hardware version 'HW 1C', the coding (ID tag) required for 'dual-use' is set to 599 Hz to limit the inverter output frequency .
  • Motor operating mode servo control:  ID tag is only used from firmware version >= V01.09.xx is evaluated for frequency limitation.
V/f characteristic curve mode (VFC mode):  ID tag is already evaluated in all firmware versions for frequency limitation.
The Main status change from V1 to V2 has been made on the i700 to prevent the limitation of the output frequency from being lifted by downloading an older firmware version. The loadability of firmware versions has therefore been deliberately restricted at this point, although the SW would otherwise be compatible.
For existing devices with old main version V1 only version V01.11.xx as the latest version.
Further FW versions are subsequently only available for V2.
Recommendation:

  • For new projects only use current series devices with firmware main version V2 . The PLC project must be created accordingly.
Service case for existing systems with i700 V1 devices:
  • In case of service the controller function for automatic firmware updates only works with a V1 replacement device.
  • If sinstead a current i700 series V2 device is installed, the following applies:
The automatic firmware update does not work. The FW-download fails and the initialization does not come to an end.
The remedy is via parameter C0640 for the older controller generation, or 0x5820 for the new Lenze controllers to deactivate the update function (C0640 =[0]). It may also be necessary to use the new setting C0640 = [2] usable, ssee: 202000346
The system can then be operated normally, although the FW version V2 previously present in the device remains active in the i700.
It is advisable to update the device versions to V2 in the PLC project.
