OLE - Object Linking and Embedding

OLE is a Microsoft term and an extension (replacement) of DDE. The target of OLE is to improve integration of different applications documents. If an object is inserted as 'Link', this is no copy, but only a reference to an external file. Modifications in the original lead to a corresponding update of all documents which are linked to the original. If an object is embedded, a copy of the original will become part of the central document. Modifications in the original do not lead to modifications in the copy. Such copied objects can, however, modified only by means of the application the object was generated with (OPC).
