Ethernet

Baseband bus system

Developer: RANK XEROX, INTEL, DEC

Target: Originally it was developed for the connection of mini computers.

It is based on the CSMA/CD- access procedure. Coaxial cables or  twisted-pair cables [twisted copper two-cores] serve as transmission medium.

Transmission speed:
  • 10 Mbps [Ethernet]
  • 100 Mbps [Fast Ethernet]
  • > 100 Mbps [Gigabit Ethernet]

Widespread technology for networking computers in a LAN. Standardised since 1983 [IEEE 802.3]. The Ethernet technology is more and more used in automation technology. Moreover, there is a difference between full duplex (sending & receiving simultaneously) and half duplex (sending OR receiving). The latter one has the CSMA/CD (Carier Sense Multiple Access and Collision Detection) protocol in order to avoid collisions (when two devices are sending at the same time).
