All drive systems which lead to a translatory movement are described as a linear drive or linear drive system. Linear drives make the movement of machine elements and equipments possible in straight line or another predefined characteristic. Rotating movements are normally converted with the help of spindle, gear rack, crank or toothed belt in translatory movements at a linear system.
Linear motors with an electrodynamic active principle also belong to the electromechanical linear drives.
