Lunchtime Session: 1 + 1 = 1?

Of course, mathematically this is not true, and also when executing this calculation on a PLC system, the result for sure is a value of 2. But why then did we choose the title of this Lunchtime Session in this way? Reason is to raise some awareness about properties of floating-point data types.

From far, long-real (= high-precision) data types suggest high accuracy. Digging deeper in IEC754 makes the behavior of floating-point calculations more obvious and explains unexpected results, depending on the value range of operators.
