Error message when loading a PDB file with a long file name

Which products are affected?
ESP-DDSx-x (Global Drive PLC Developer Studio, all versions)
ESP-GDC2 (Global Drive Control, all versions)

What happens?
By means of the Global Drive Control (GDC) software the parameter set of a PLC target system (e. g. of a Servo PLC) is to be read. When the drives are searched, no suitable device description file (*.PDB) is found for the PLC target system, although the correct device description file is in the search path of the GDC. If the device description file is manually assigned to the found PLC target system, the following error message will be indicated:
4: String too long – max. 50 characters at ' '.

When does the problem occur?
When compiling the PLC object, DDS creates automatically a project-specific device description file. As a name for the device description file DDS uses the data name of the DDS project file (*.PRO) and adds the character strings  '_S', '_1' or '_2' depending on the selected language. The device description file of the project file TEST.PRO e. g. is called TEST_S.PDB

The above-described response occurs if the file name of the device description file for the PLC target system including dot ('.') and the data name extension (PDB) is longer than 50 characters.

Possible diagnostics?
In the error message GDC shows at which place of the file name the error occurred.

Short-term measures/recommendations?
If a PLC target system is to be accessed via GDC, please make sure that the name of the DDS project file has not more than 44 characters (without dot and file name extension).
Renaming the device description is no remedy for this function restriction.

Evaluation:
Generally, 44 characters are sufficient for assigning a file name. This function restriction is detected at the latest when commissioning the machine.
