Sin/Cos Hiperface absolute-value encoders, SinCos encoders: Required number of increments for full position resolution

Question:
What is the minimum number of increments/number of SinCos periods required for SinCos Hiperface absolute-value encoders and SinCos encoders to reach the full position resolution of 65536 increments per revolution (inc/rev)?

Answer: 
Theoretically and purely mathematically, a number of increments / periods of 32 SinCos periods is already enough to reach a position resolution of 65536 inc/rev (16 bits).
Lenze recommends, however, a minimum number of periods of 128 SinCos periods per revolution for SinCos encoders and SinCos absolute-value encoders.

In practical operation, SinCos encoders with 128, 512 or 1024 periods/revolution are often used. This number of periods ensures a position resolution of 65536 inc/rev.
