Watchdog exception after device exchange when starting the boot project (corrected for projects created for controllers from V3.21.2)

Corrected from:
EtherCAT Master Device Description V3.18.4.0
Cabinet Controller c300 V3.21.2
Cabinet Controller 3200C V3.21.2
Panel Controller p300 V3.21.2
Panel Controller p500 V3.21.2

Response of the new version:
The new device description of the EtherCAT master ensures that the watchdog is not triggered during initialisation of the EtherCAT master. In new PLC Designer projects created for the Lenze controller V3.21.2 or greater, this EtherCAT master device description is used automatically.
If the function restriction occurs in existing projects (e.g. after a controller exchange), either the new device description for the EtherCAT master must be used in the PLC Designer project or a firmware version V3.19 or lower must be loaded in the affected controller. You can load firmware version V3.19 as follows:
  1. Connect a USB stick to your workplace computer.
  2. If not already present: Create a folder \Backup in the basic folder on the USB stick.
  3. Save the restore file that matches your controller in the \Backup folder.
    Firmware V3.19 for:
  4. Unpack the ZIP file via the context function 'Extract all' (right mouse button) in this folder.
Make sure that the same folder is not created again below the InitRestore_xxxx folder.
  5. Start the current version of the »Backup&Restore« software.
  6. Select the USB stick.
  7. Select the Restore/Update tab.
  8. Select the action Restore. During a restore, a backup of the controller is first created in order to be able to reconstruct the original state (in the event of an error). There is then a file with the name IPCBackup_xxxx on the USB stick. There must be sufficient free memory available on the USB stick.
  9. Select the firmware file from 'InitRestore_xxxx'.
  10. Press the <Start> button.
  11. After completing the action, connect the USB stick to the controller.
  12. Boot the controller. The firmware is installed.

What happens?
After switching on or starting the controller, the red 'Error' LED of the controller lights up. Processing of the PLC programme does not start. The controller reports a watchdog exception. This is logged in the logbook of the controller as follows:
*EXCEPTION* [Watchdog] occurred: App=[Application], Task=[TaskHighPriority]

When does the behaviour occur?
The behaviour can occur when projects with EtherCAT masters that have been running on a controller with firmware V3.19 or older are started on a controller with newer firmware, as the initialisation of the EtherCAT bus requires more time.

Which products are affected?
Cabinet Controller c300 from V3.20
Cabinet Controller 3200C from  V3.20
Panel Controller p300 from V3.20
Panel Controller p500 from V3.20
when using the EtherCAT Master device description < V3.18.4.0

Short-term measures:
  • Deactivate the watchdog in the task configuration of the PLC Designer project.
or
  • Load the device firmware V3.19 or older into the controller. This can also be done, for example, by importing a previously created backup using the backup & restore function. After importing the backup, check the firmware version! If the firmware version is V3.20 or higher after importing the backup, contact Lenze Service.
Background: Not every firmware version is supported by every controller hardware version. In this case, when restoring a backup, the application is restored but the firmware is not updated.
Evaluation / recommendations:
When switching on the Lenze controller, a watchdog exception (task overflow) can occur in very few applications if a PLC project has been created for a controller firmware V3.19 or older and is imported on more recent controller versions with firmware V3.20 or newer. This situation can occur, for example, during a controller exchange when the SD card from a controller with older firmware is inserted into a controller with newer firmware. An applicative solution is described under "Short-term measures".
