Bus load determination for system bus (CAN)

Question:

How can the current bus load of the system bus (CAN) be determined?

Answer:

The bus load within a CAN network can normally be determined with a CAN analyser (additional hardware).

If there is no CAN analyser available, one can resort to display codes in drive controller 9300. Code C0361/1 indicates the bus load share of the individual drive controller 9300 (sum of all outgoing frames). Subcodes 1 - 12 may provide information about the shares accounted for by the various CAN channels within a controller – see GDC menu 'System bus (CAN) / Diagnosis'.
The total bus load of the CAN network is the sum of the individual bus loads under C0361/1. If there are also other sending bus devices (e.g. terminal extension), the relevant bus load shares must be added together. If necessary, the share of a terminal extension can be determined from the bus load of a receiving 9300.

To ensure smooth bus operation of a CAN network the maximum bus load should not exceed 80 %.
