Inverter with controlled mains rectifier. At the input such inverters have an active power switch instead of the diodes. This requires more control, but it has some advantages, e. g.
- energy regeneration to the mains, e. g. when masses triggered by the motor have to be decelerated.
- almost sinusoidal power consumption from the mains showing much less low-frequency-harmonics as well as
- quick changeover between motor-driven and generator operation.
Possible resonance superelevation at the mains side due to the chopping at the input side can be reduced sufficiently by special filters. Typical applications for AFE inverters are mchine tools, processing machines, presses and packaging machines, as well as robotics and handling devices.
