Firmware

Firmware is a software close to the hardware integrated in the supplied device. It is the sum of the application software and the operating system software. Generally, the software remains constant during the device's life time or during a longer period of time. Usually, modifications are made only by the manufacturer.  

It is stored in a read-only storage [ROM, EPROM, Flash-Memory] and cannot be exchanged easily.
