i700 power supply module: How many i700 axis modules or other drive controllers can be connected?

Question:
How many i700 axis modules can be connected to an i700 power supply module?
Can you also connect controllers from other device series to an i700 power supply module?

Answer:
Basically, the i700 power supply modules can be used to supply and operate all controllers that are equipped with a separate charging current limitation and are designed for the same DC voltage. The following criteria have to be taken into account for all controllers:
  1. Continuous power of the motors (operating phase)
  2. Initial charging current of the devices (switch-on phase)

Concerning 1. (continuous power):
The total continuous power to be fed during operation must not permanently exceed the rated power of the i700 power supply module.
An overcurrent operation of the axis modules leads to short-time overcurrents (15-s cycle and 3-min. cycle). The i700 power supply modules are designed for the same overcurrent cycles as the i700 axis modules.
Rough consideration based on the rated power of the connected motors:
(Rated power of the i700 power supply module)   >=   (total rated motor powers)  +  (total internal power consumption of the i700 axis modules)

Detailed consideration based on the actually requested power of the motors:
(Rated power of the i700 power supply module)   >=   (total actual motor powers)  +  (total internal power consumption of the i700 axis modules)

Data: Rated powers (from i700 hardware manual):

  • i700 power supply module (30A), without mains filter (choke):    10.3 kW
  • i700 power supply module (30A), with mains filter (choke):          15.4 kW
  • i700 power supply module (60A), without mains filter (choke):    20.6 kW
  • i700 power supply module (60A), with mains filter (choke):          30.9 kW

Concerning 2. (initial charging current):
When switching on the mains, the DC-bus capacitors of the connected controllers are charged via the mains connection of the i700 power supply module. The charging current is limited by the charging resistors available in the i700 axis modules or the other controllers. The mains input of the power supply module must not be overloaded by the total initial charging currents. In the i700 power supply module, the max. initial charging current is limited by the maximally permissible surge current (IFSM) of the rectifier at the mains input.

In practical operation, the initial charging current only has to be checked if a particularly large number of axis modules is to be connected. This may for instance be the case if the motors' utilisation rate is very low or if the motors are not operated simultaneously (simultaneity factor).

Considering the initial charging current:
(Max. initial charging current of the i700 power supply module)   >=  (total initial charging currents of the i700 axis modules)
