DriveServer with network connection (LAN)

Question:

What has to be observed in case of a remote maintainance of a drive controller via the DriveServer, if both computers (PC's) work with the operating system Windows 98 and are linked via a network connection (LAN)?

Answer:

WIN98 enables a connection with the DriveServer via a LAN with certain restrictions. WIN98 cannot start automatically an OPC server via a LAN connection. The OPC servers must be started manually on the single computers.

The DCOM settings must be set as shown in the DriveServer handbook (EDBDRS1-DEEN) chapter 5, page 13. If you are connected to an internal network, please contact your system administrator.

A special software must be started manually on the target computer. The software is called 'Opcneum', is located under 'c\:windows\system' and must be started manually several times. The Task Manager now shows how often it is repeatedly entered.

Reason: Each connection via a network (LAN) requires the software 'Opcneum' once on the target computer. Examplel: When  'Opcneum' is started 4 times (is indicated 4x in the Task Manager), you can contact the DriveServer for 4 times via a LAN connection. If  'Opcneum' is not started, it is not possible to establish a connection.  In case of WIN NT and WIN 2000 this is controlled automatically.

Tip:
For this reason we recommend to work with WIN NT or WIN 2000, if you use a LAN.
