Configuring Automatic Firmware Updates for EtherCAT Slaves

Functional Enhancement:

The parameter set for the Lenze c520, c550, and c750 controllers has been expanded to include parameter 0x5820:001. This parameter has three selectable values that can be used to configure whether firmware is transferred to the EtherCAT slaves connected to the EtherCAT master.

Included in which products?
c520 controller, version 1.5 and later
c550 controllers, version 1.5 and later
c750 controller, version 1.5 and later

Application:
The controller’s EtherCAT master compares the firmware major version (i.e., the first digit of the firmware version number) of the connected EtherCAT Slaves (i550, i700) with the firmware major versions configured in the PLC project. Depending on parameter 0x5820:001, the EtherCAT master behaves as follows:

0: Disabled

The controller does not perform a firmware download, but instead immediately starts the parameter set download to the EtherCAT slaves. If this is successful, it sets the EtherCAT bus to operational status.

1: Enabled. Slave Main Version = Configured Version

The controller performs a firmware download if the firmware version of the respective EtherCAT slave differs from the one configured in the PLC project, but their firmware major versions are the same .
After the firmware download, the parameter set download to the EtherCAT slave begins. If this is successful, the controller sets the EtherCAT bus to the operational status.

If the major version of the EtherCAT slave differs from the configured firmware major version, the EtherCAT bus does not switch to the operational status.

2: Enabled. Slave Main Version > Configured Version (default setting)

If the firmware major version of the EtherCAT slave is higher than the major version configured in the PLC project, the controller does not perform a firmware download, but instead starts the parameter set download to the EtherCAT slaves. If this is successful, it sets the EtherCAT bus to operational status.

If the firmware version of the respective EtherCAT slave differs from the one configured in the PLC project, but their firmware major versions are the same, the controller performs a firmware download. After the firmware download, the parameter set download to the EtherCAT slaves begins. If this is successful, the controller sets the EtherCAT bus to operational status.

If the EtherCAT slave’s firmware major version is lower than the configured major version, the EtherCAT bus does not transition to the operational status.
