Speed meets precision

The revolution in wood processing

Together with machine manufacturer MFL, we have developed a new type of chop saw that represents a revolution in wood processing. With shorter throughput times, higher wood transport speed and less waste of high-quality wood, the chop saw can optimize processes in any woodworking factory.

Initial situation

Favoured by climate change, the number of pests, including the domestic bark beetle, continues to increase. This causes severe damage to wood, which in turn affects the price of wood. In the wood industry, it is therefore becoming increasingly important to keep the scrap of high-quality wood as low as possible. New solutions for wood processing are in demand.

Sales Contact

About the company Mayr-Melnhof Holz:

Mayr-Melnhof Holz in Gaishorn/See in Upper Styria is among the top 5 in Europe in the production of glulam and cross laminated timber. The cross laminated timber processed by the designed saw, is mainly used in house construction / technical functional buildings or wind towers up to 100m high.

Solution approach

The machine builder MFL (Maschinenfabrik Liezen und Gießerei GesmbH) set itself the task of developing a sawing machine for the Mayr-Melnhof Holz company that would be second to none in terms of precision and throughput time. At the same time, the company's wood waste was to be reduced to a minimum. MFL took over the mechanical implementation of the sawing machine, Lenze the control system and the automation process.

Challenge

The biggest challenges of the project were the horizontally aligned transport of the wooden boards through the machine, as well as the reduction of the wood waste:

“Ensuring a straight track despite deceleration, capping and acceleration
of the boards, at the desired high transport speed, was quite a difficult task.
Reducing the wood waste was also no easy task due to
the required increase in throughput time.”

- says our sales engineer Günther Raffer

Both could be realized by using our sophisticated control system. For that reason, the Lenze controller 3200C and the safety controller c250-S were used. Not only our control technology was installed in the machine. To realize the high drive requirements, Lenze 9400 drive controllers were used in conjunction with highly dynamic MCS servo motors.

The result

Through know-how, creativity and innovative spirit, it was finally possible to develop a solution that even exceeded the customer's requirements.

Thus, a machine was realized which has a wood transport speed of 6 m/s and a cutting time of 300ms. With the new machine, the quantity of cross laminated timber to be processed can be increased and the wood waste reduced. The developed solution represents an opportunity for woodworking companies to optimize their processing operations and can be adapted to any individual customer requirement.

Satisfied partner, satisfied customer

The customer's expectations and requirements were even exceeded with the new chop saw . In such revolutionary projects, it is of course important to have good cooperation with the customer also with partners, as in this case with the machine manufacturer MFL:

“Decisive for the successful implementation of such projects is the

targeted coordination between mechanical engineering and drive and control technology. An essential advantage was the fact that all the necessary control and drive components come from a single source."

- says Reinhard Rieger, Head of Technologies at MFL
